A wonderful week of Printing

It has been a busy week at the studio printing a custom order of change of address card for a family that have just done the big move from NSW moved to sunny Perth W.A, lucky them,

I love Western Australia.

Last name and address has been blanked out for privacy purposes

I have also been busy printing some pretty heart gift tags for Valentines day which is coming up very soon in the 14th of February.

I also decided to print some handy little notebooks with some of my older prints

These single beehive notecards as well as other designs will now be available if you want to just write a little letter to someone extra special you can without having to buy a pack of them.

These will all be available at Salamanca Market this weekend

oh the excitement I have been wait for this package to arrive from England for about a month and it is finally here .

I really can't wait to get started on carving these block but they are so precious I think I will have a bit of a ponder before I go ripping into one oh and I need a couple of new engraving tools .

It is going to be interest to feel the difference between carving lino to carving hard end grain wood. oh what an adventure:)

I thought I would get back into the swing of things by listing some new items on etsy .

I actually made these brooches a little while ago but never got round to listing them in any of my shops so I thought it was about time

The images that are on the brooches are parts of my other linocut prints that didn't quite work out the way I had planned for instance a smudge of the paper or a fingerprint or just a not perfect print that other parts of the print were perfect so instead of wasting all the paper I thought I would up cycle them into something else a vwalla original art brooches!

As well as my brooches My Apricot jam labels have finally made an appearance on Etsy as well I am not sure how these will be receive but I like them and thought somebody else might like them too if they are popular I will think about making some more with different images like raspberries and strawberries and stuff like that :)

Well we are only 2 days into the new year and the work has already begun

I love the feeling of having something to go ahead with and feeling enthusiastic about getting on with it.

a beautiful dark rendition of this classic Christmas carol of which on Annie lennox could produce.

The clip is especially beautiful in my eyes, if I were to be a film direct this is the kind of clip I would like to make .

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all my lovely customers who have come along to all the markets or found me while browsing the internet .

Also a big thank you to the all the retailers that have helped make 2011 such a happy and successful year for me.

I am looking forward to working and sharing lots of new product with you all in the coming year.

2011 saw Ruby Victoria Letterpress & Printmaking grow from a little business that was run from my kitchen table to a studio based workshop in Battery Point which was a huge step for me but a step that I was very happy to make. and so was my husband :)

In the coming year I am hoping to be a little more organised and I will be holding workshop, teaching basic lino carving and printing to small groups this will be another big step for me but I believe it is where my work has been heading for some time and I have just been to chicken to just jump in and do it , but with the encouragement of some of my beautiful creative friends, I have decided to tentatively take the plunge.

I also have some exciting collaborations in the pipeline with a couple of lovely mainland businesses that I am very proud to be working with, one a florist and the other a food importer, it feels wonderful to be going into the new year with work waiting for me to get stuck into.

I will also be take part in a group exhibition at Rebecca Roth gallery along with Grace Garton, Shane Garton, Elizabeth Barsham and a few other local artists, it is going to be a very interesting show and I am very proud to be exhibiting along side these amazingly talented artists more about this when the time of the exhibition draws nearer just think Autumn symphony :)

That's right I am off to the Barn market again this weekend over on the Eastern shore just before the eastlands shopping complex on your left hand side of the road

for their big Christmas Shindig!

It's going to be huge, bbq and face painting for the kids, loads of handmade Christmas pressies to be spotted and bought.

today has been full of beautiful things and people

Today Ruby and I took a trip out to Richmond with my good friend Grace.

Grace and I had planned a trip out there to see the teddies on the green shop as I had never been there I bought the cute little pink Teddie bear and the little worry doll brooch so sweet .

The weather was so lovely out there we took a walk around the town, we has a beautiful garlic pizza for lunch then drove back to Graces for a cuppa.

to my glee Grace gave me one of her beautiful handmade elephant dolls and one of her print as a trade for some of my new bookplates and paper bunting, I chose this particular print as it reminds me of grace and I love Crows so I thought it was a good pick.

Another lovely surprise when I got home was my lovely big bag of handmade notebooks i bought off etsy,made by my friend Isis were sitting on my doorstep waiting for me to get home, I love getting mail espacially when it is something I can print on :)

While at the Boutique market this past weekend and for the last couple of months at Salamanca market I have had customers asking for the longer lengths of lino cut bunting, I was only making smaller one and they have been super dooper popular but people saw the ones I decorated my market gazebo with and wanted to buy them so after Meeting Rachel of Boutique markets I decided it was time to do it.

Rachel had asked for a red and forest green one so here it is!

I have no less that 15 design/craft markets in the lead up to the big day so there really is no shortage of fantastic markets to buy handmade.

Just a little update

I just want to apologise to you for my long absences here at the moment, things have been abit busy here of late with moving house and other things.

I have been busy reprinting alot on my most popular greeting cards, a couple of weeks ago at Salamanca market during an insident when we were packing the car to go home, I had a fall and during the commotion some one helped themself to a box of my greeting cards, so the past couple of weeks have been spent at the studio reprinting approximately 600 greeting cards to replace the ones that were stolen.

I have also been busy drawing and printing some new bookplate those of you who follow me on Facebook will have already seen the pictures of them but I thought I would share here also

Wow its been a bit of a long time bewtween posts on here by the looks of it, lots been going on here at home and at the studio

I have been getting ready for the Christmas season getting all stocked up for out trip up to Launceston for Niche and other local markets around the place as well as filling lovely wholesale order for Oatlands handmade, The Queen Victoria museum and art gallery bookshop and for Annie of Sanctum in Launceston.

I have also been kept bus with all the local markets which are all hotting up which is wonderful and have attended a couple of new market for the first time like the Longford makers market up in the north of Tassie and at the lovely Nook market in North Hobart.

I have been printing lots of lovely festive greeting cards, notecards, and mini paper bunting/garlands as well as some new things that I haven't printed before and decided I just wanted to make them for the fun of doing something a little bit different.

Enter the Thaumatrope, A thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in Victorian times. A disk or card with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to combine into a single image due to persistence of vision.

To my utter delight I received this post card from my friend and fellow Printmaker Alfred Stark in the post the other day.

Alfred lives and works in Illinois USA and is having and exhibition of his works for the next month, if you are in the area or are close enough to travel I suggest you check this show out .

I personally have quite a few of Alfreds works in my collection of prints and they are some of my prized possessions and are destined to be hung very soon in our new house.

This exhibition is going to showcase Alfred's latest collection of hand printed wood cut and they are funny and fabulous I love them!

In an Australian first the handmade community has come together to Collaborate for a Cause with 220 Facebook Businesses creating nearly 100 one of a kind handmade items to be auction this coming weekend (29th - 31 July) to raise fund for more than 40 Charities

“The aim of 'Collaborate for a Cause' is to promote friendship, understanding and fun throughout the Facebook handmade community, while raising important funds for charities.

“What sets it apart from other charity auctions is that it lets donors select their own charity recipient and that each donated item is a collaborative effort between two or more handmade businesses, meaning that every piece is truly exclusive.

Anna of King Billy contacted me to see if I would be interested in doing a collaborative project with her as part of the Facebook Collaborate for a cause project of course I said yes not only to help another person but to also see what Anna would make with the fabric I sent to her to work her magic with and boy she did just that, I sent up a pack of some of my newly printed red snowflake design printed calico and waited to see what she came up with.

We had a lovely time at the Apron Market even though it was chilly people still came out to see what was on offer , great to see some familiar faces and to meet new people that like my work.

What a great day the 1st of July is turning out to be firstly there is the fabulous Apron Design Market on at the Seaport tomorrow from 4- 9pm and Saturday from 9-4pm

Some of you may know that I have been playing with printing on calico fabric and you probably know I am not a sewer so when I finished printing my first fabric I began thinking of way to show case what can actually be made with my design, I decided top put a call out to anyone on Facebook that:

1)could sew to safe themselves
2)wanted to get their hands on some of my new fabric to play with
3) agree to send me photo of what they had made with the fabric

We finally got a little fur friend, I have been wanting to get another kitty for along time but was a little worried about Ruby being too young to understand how to behave around a kitten, I am glad I waited as it is easier to tell her why and what for of alot of things that would have been impossible to teach her before, not that she listens alot of the time but we are getting there with her.

So anyway this is our very handsome little Bruce , cute hu! We love him and I think he is going to be one very spoilt kitty even Allan seems to be very fond of him, well with a face like Bruce's resistance is futile.

while I have been busy playing with printing on fabric in the last couple of weeks I have also been working on some new linocuts to be printed on paper and here is one of them .

Hand coloured with Windsor and Newton water colours I have decided to paint these in different colours so there is a bit of variety and it makes it a little more fun for me.
I will have these available for sale at Salamanca market (near the ball & chain grill) this Saturday and I will have them listed in my online stores shortly

It has been another productive day today.

First I dropped into Rebecca Roths Gallery this morning to drop off my brooch for the upcoming winter brooch exhibition and to my surprise she loved it so much she bought it funny ! and very flattering considering I do not class myself a jeweller by any stretch of the imagination so this was wonderful after lots of worrying if anyone would like it !

The brooch is totally hand made and no two are the same, the red print is a linocut in calico that has been fused and sewn onto wool felt then blanket stitched and stuffed to give it a puffy feel and appearance, each printed felt/calico piece is then attached with metal jewellery links.
I will be making more of these special one of a kind brooches and they will be for sale at Rebecca s shop after the Exhibition.

After I left Rebecca it was off to the studio for a full day of printing was a great day for it not too hot or too cold, the ink on the press was behaving itself and the printing was done in no time.

This left me with time to play with another new linocut to be made into Christmas Decorations I managed to get the black and the red printed .

With the next Apron Design Market looming I thought it best to get my thinking cap on and have a think about what I could make to get in the Christmas Spirit.
I came up with this new linocut design of these press snow flakes I have plans to make these in to pretty little brooches similar to the flower ones I have been making.
I thought I would also print these on calico and sell in packs to be used for quilting or any other craft project for Christmas or whenever.

I thought I would just share some images from my husband Allans group River Song,
a collaboration of 6 like minded friends that just like to make music and together
wanted to share it with others.
Their music was very well received by those who attended , they played a mix of original compositions, collaboration by members and traditional Celtic music.
They will be holding another concert this coming July , dates and venue I am unsure of just now but I will post them on here for those who are interested a little later on.

linocut & felt brooches

Today I decided that I was going to use some of my handprinted fabric to make some felt brooches.
I used iron on adhesive to stabilise the printed calico to the felt then cut around them,
I then stitched around the flower with a back stitch in a complimentary coloured thread.
To Finish the brooch i blanket stitched the back on, stuffed and then finished stitching to close up the seam.
I will have some finished brooches at Salamanca Market this Saturday for sale

So here are some photos of my fabric printing effort of the last week or so,
They were printed with a lino block onto natural calico fabric using my table top letterpress Machine, What do you think?

I am just trying to work out what I will actually do with them now .

I thought they might look nice as bunting or sewn to the front of a plain white t-shirt for a little girl or even maybe used for sewing together to make a pretty little quilt.
I have been wondering if they would be ok to sell as little packs of assorted coloured squares so that people can decide themselves what they might like to make with them this way I won't have to embarrass myself by attempting to sew :)

I would love to hear some suggestions on how and what I should use these pretty little squares for.

The Ludlow has Landed

So here are the first photos of the Ludlow type caster .
It was delivered here today, crane and all alot of heaving and a couple of swear words and we finally got it into place .

the next phase is to save some more money up to get someone in to service it for me and give me some tips on how to use it safely and correctly we are talking molten lead here baby , so no mucking around.

I would like you all to meet my tiny Caravan that we have named her teeny as she stretched a massive 12ft, she is so cute that I wanted to share her with everyone so I have carved her out of lino and printed her on greeting cards.
Each one has been printed on 100 % cotton rag paper and was then hand coloured with Windsor and Newton water colours, these can be either given to a friend
or kept for yourself and put in a frame.
These cards will be available from my etsy store as of this week and at Salamanca Market this weekend.

Ruby Playing the Hurdy Gurdy with Jane

who said fate doesn't have a hand in things ? things have just seems to falling to place for Allan in the last couple of months we have been meeting musicians that are on the same wave length musically to Allan in all kinds of places, markets and the like, it has been just a matter of luck and just speaking up and asking if they would like to collaborate in some way.

We have been having a lot of visitor here the last couple of weeks Allan and some musician friends have been having rehearsals here every week for their up coming concert at the end of May at the St George cathedral in Battery point, Hobart.

The concert will consist of singing, piano, violin, flute, classical guitar and Hurdy Gurdy the music has a folk/celtic sound and are a mix of traditional and original music.
From what I have heard here at rehearsals it is going to be a spectacular concert and definately one not to be missed.

It has also been a wonderful education for Ruby with all the different instruments passing through our door and hearing so much beautiful music she is having the childhood I dreamt about, my lucky girl.

A huge sigh of relief

As of this week this building with the

Muir's signwriting on it is going to be my studio space .

Yes that is right I have after almost 2 years of searching I have finally found a studio space and it has turned out to be the studio of my dreams right near the sea with a beautiful sea breeze and jetties to sit on and ponder new creative ideas.
A place work and a place to have all of my printing gear at the ready anytime I feel a creative pang hit me.

So Excited my studio space is situated in the top of the building with a water view over looking the Derwent river and the slip yard , there is also apparently a boat builder and a glass blower in the same building but I haven't met them as yet but I am looking forward to it.

so anyway here is a photo of the studio space inside, all empty and clean and ready for me to fill it with work tables, drying racks paper map draws, cases of type, a type caster (Ludlow) and all the rest of my printing stuff that has been choking up our living space for the past couple of years at home

I can almost hear the house and my family let out a collective sigh of relief all at once :)

I have been playing this week with mixing colours while on the press by just dabbing different coloured ink all over the inking plate and rolling the rollers over it to give you a lovely variegated colour.
I am pretty happy with how they have turned out, they have a very warm Autumn feel to them.

I adore mixing new colours especially when they remind me of my favorite season, I spend most of last night pouring over my Pantone colour formulas and mixing beautifully smelly ink
and getting thinks set up for the days printing today.

Not long now until the Apron Design Market next week at the Seaport in Launceston,
so I'd best get my printing apron on and get cracking.

Celebrating Autumn

I love Autumn!
it is my favorite season of the year here in Tasmania unlike many other states in Australia we have the good fortune of still getting four seasons a year, most people that live in Tassie attest that we get 4 seasons in one day, which isn't too far from the truth !
Any way to celebrate the coming of my favorite time of the year I have decided to design some autumn inspired designs to print I haven't decided on colours maybe you could give me some suggestion that would be great? :)

I will hopefully I will have these ready for the upcoming Apron Design Market to be held in Launceston on the 2nd and 3rd of April at the Seaport .

Craft is the new black on Edge Radio

Tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm I will be having a little talk to Angelica on her radio show
on Edge Radio called Craft is the new black.

I am very excited about being asked to go in and have talk Angelica about
Ruby Victoria letterpress & printmaking the work I do .

It is a relaxed and easy going 1 hour show that endeavors to encourage people to think and talk about craft, and to also inform about what is going on in the art in the local community and who the practitioners are and what they do.

Edge Radio is a community radio station. They have a great website - http://www.edgeradio.org.au/
which includes live streaming - so people all over the world can tune in !

I think it is going to be great fun but I am afraid I am going to come off as a bit of an old dags to the young folk at the Uni where the station is broadcast from, when they ask me what my favorite music is lol

What is letterpress

I was reading yesterday on a forum where a linocut printer had raised the issue about letterpress printers misusing of tags on etsy listings and saying that it may be misleading to some people that are apparently not in the know about letterpress printing and what actually constitutes a letterpress print.

If something is printed using a letterpress machine of some sort, does that not make it letterpress printed ?

I just find it amusing that people think that something can only be letterpress if it has a stupid amount of impression on your type and paper, yes it is something that differentiates letterpress from other sort of printing but it isn't the only thing.

I am a letterpress printer and carved my own blocks for printing out of lino and print them using my letterpress table top machine, I personally think that this is closer to the original letterpress blocks once used hundreds of years ago, than the computer generated photo polymer plates most people are using and calling letterpress, just because a print doesn't have deep impression doesn't make it any less a letterpress print.

When I was doing my apprenticeship as a commercial printer running large windmill presses it was considered very bad workmanship to have any impression shown on a piece of paper that you had printed. it took great skill, knowledge and patience to prints something without any impression showing on a page, that would be evenly printed and be a legible piece of printing .

There have been carved blocks used in this type of print right from the invention of printing and the printing press, I don't see anywhere that it is said there were photo polymer plate making machines in use in the 15th century but there is loads of info on handcarved block for printing as this was all they had.
That being said I don't have a problem with the use of modern technology regarding design and printing I think it is wonderful, I just choose to go down a more traditional route in my work.

I just don't agree with people saying that what I create is less than what other people are making and calling letterpress, when they don't have any idea how much

time,work and care goes into carving out my designs, setting handset type and printing one impression at a time.

That being said whenever I list something on etsy I always state that it is and original linocut block that has been printed on a letterpress machine so that people can decide if they want to purchase a print or not.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference and what you consider to be letterpress but I don't have any problems with calling work I have printed on my letterpress machine a piece of letterpress work

yes I agree that some of the tagging people use can be misleading but I don't know if they are trying to be misleading or if they personally don't really know the difference between traditional letterpress and something that is designed on a computer and is made into a plate, but then I guess most people don't care as long as it looks good and it had the deep impression that they now assume is how it should be.
Deep impression is a relatively new thing to be accepted and I guess people have been re-educated to think that if there isn't a heap of impression then it can't be letterpress.

I have lots of people at markets running their fingers across my work and looking puzzled when they don't feel it, this can be very disheartening for me because it is like they are not even considering whether they actually like the image but want to buy a piece of dented paper bit funny really I think !

As usual it is pretty hard to keep ruby out of product shots,
here she is again with a job I have just done for a lovely couple in Mt Nelson.
Notecards to send out to friends and family to announce the arrival of their new baby.

People seem to really like the debossed look, type without ink and just impression, I have to admit this works very well on the cotton rag paper I use for all of my stationery as it is soft velvety and thick and beautiful to write on.

Well so much for printing yesterday after dropping ruby off to school yesterday I decided to go in an do a few things in town after dropping Allan off to work, I had a couple of hours to kill until I had to go back and pick Allan up again.
so I thought I'd go looking around the tip shops
Look what I found this darling little tin toy printing machine made in England

I don't think it is functional but it is still very cute
I think and for only $4.00 I couldn't leave it there.

I also found this very retro picnic set to put in the caravan

I have to admit it Isn't in my favorite colour combination's but very handy
even still and pretty cheap for $15.00.

An excited ruby

A very exciting day for us today it is Ruby goobies first day at Big girl school (kinder) she was so excited to be wearing her new uniform and school shoes she looks so grown up where have the last 4 and a half years gone not long ago she was just a little bubba and now she is signing herself into her first day at kinda

While Ruby is at school I will be home doing more printing, I have had to bring in the big display rack for drying prints chaos is not the word for our house at the moment :)

my sample was printed by Mpress studio from California USA

Charlotte Rivers , the author of the Little Book of Letterpress and other arts and graphic design books, produced this A-Z or letterpress print for the issue and what a lovely job she has done too

A very welcome visitor

We were very happy to welcome our friend and international concert pianist Rhodri Clarke to our home this morning .

Allan & Rhodri : no one get out of this house without having consumed
good coffee before hand

We first met and heard Rhodri play a couple of years ago at the home Hill winery in the huon Valley and where totally blown away by his passionate playing.

Allan had kept in touch with Rhodri and share with him his compositions and Rhodri showed some interest in playing Allan pieces.

Now that Rhodri is back in Tasmania after a year or 2 in the Netherlands and living close by he dropped in for a talk a coffee and a bit of a workshop .

Allan was terribly proud to hear his pieces played by a concert pianist and have him really love the music he has been composing.

Rhodri has ask Allan for his permission to play some of his pieces at up coming concerts.

Thrilled is not the word to describe Allan at the moment :)

Well this week sees me busy getting ready for a full on weekend of Market coming up, the first is the Maker Market in Launceston at the Design Center in St John Street, in conjunction with Festivale at the City park from 11am -3pm on Saturday
The second one back down in Hobart at The Market in the Masonic Hall in SandyBay Road on Sunday from 10am - 3pm
This will be the first of the Markets for 2011 And it promises to be a purler with lots of new designers cant wait to have a look !

Both Markets have a fantastic reputation for only having the best of the best Artists, Crafters and designer that Tasmania has to offer attending to sell their creations and there is always something beautiful to buy for yourself or some someone special especially with Valentines day coming up :)

Over 4 dozen letterpress studios from all over the world have donated and edition of their work to be given away in each and every issue, us letterpress printers are a generous lot really :)

Plum Vintage in Kyogle NSW
are now stocking my products in their beautiful shop packed full of lovely vintage wares and other wonderful gift items.

I especially like the vintage round mirror with the leaping dear
very art deco.

Here are some of my cards and tags displayed in Mays new card rack made by her very handy husband, I think I might put an order in for one !

There is a new gallery space in Salamanca called Spacebar and it's launch is on Tomorrow night
come along and meet Lisa and take a look as some lovely local and interstate artist works there for sale. its a wonderful space and and if you are a local artist looking for a place to show off your work Spacebar provide you with opportunity to show and sell your work through renting space from them on a lease basis cool hu!
